Class of 2014

Going by my rough calculations, a 5lb bass should be around 10 years old, and following this late-season flurry, there appears to be a class of 2014 around now. On last night’s trip, I hooked and landed a really hard-fighting bass of about 5.5lb.

I arrived at my spot four hours before high tide and, over the next four hours, missed a lovely slow run and a couple of aborted attempts. However, dead on high, as I was standing at the water’s edge wondering how the forecast could be so wrong, the wind had really picked up, I felt a lovely knock and the braid suddenly run across my finger.

The run was fast, almost schoolie-like, but when I connected it definitely wasn’t a small bass. A really strong fish ran parallel to the shoreline trying its best to take line. After another determined line-taking run, I started to think I had hooked something special, so I was surprised, after a lengthy battle with the undertow, when I saw the bass waiting to be beached.

I wasn’t complaining, though. She measured 23" to the fork, so a good 5lb+ in my opinion. She looked so much bigger, and I have to admit I measured her three times just to make sure. I caught another bass at about 4lb roughly 20 minutes later, and that was it - a wonderful night, full of amazing memories I won’t ever forget.

Can’t wait for the class reunion in another ten years!
