Lined up like match anglers
Reports of mackerel had me scurrying to the beach with my light lure rod and a small mepps spinner. Arrived at my first location and was amazed to see so many anglers lined up along the shore like match anglers pegged along a canal. After a quick chat it appeared I was about 2 hours too late, and with the conditions looking decidedly un-mackerel like, I got back into the car and drove to another location.
Now, if anyone follows this fool they will realise that my hunches with mackerel over the years are rubbish, but this time I was right. Arrived at my second mark and was soon into mackerel. At one point I had nine on successive casts, and some of them were of a decent size, with the best around the 1lb mark. The mepps spinner definitely sorts out the bigger fish in my opinion, and catching one at a time on a very light set up is great fun.
Part of the catch. If you fancy trying a Mepps spinner, I remove two of the hooks from the treble and squash the remaining barb to ease unhooking. You will lose the odd fish but it doesn't happen as often as you would imagine.
