A poor return for my efforts
Just a quick update following a trip out last week.
I had planned to fish the evening before, but I didn’t trust the weather forecast enough to brave the rain in the hope it would stop. As usual, when you don’t go, they got it right - and it did! However, everything looked good for a day trip to my favourite venue for this time of year.
As you get older, things change, it’s inevitable. I’ve started getting a really bad pain in my right wrist from a skateboard injury (long story, I was trying to show off!) back in my 40s. It’s becoming a real problem to hold the rod when a cold wind is blowing, so I was relieved when the tide and conditions allowed me to put the rod in the rest after a couple of hours.
I fished hard for nearly five hours for just one small bass. I happened to be out of my chair, looking down at the reel and thinking, 'it should start to spin with a run now,' when it did. The bass initially charged toward me, so I had no idea of its size until it tried to run parallel to the shore, but it was clearly no titan of the deep.
Around 1.5 lb, quickly returned, and that was it. The long walk back at least put some warmth back into my bones. I’m really looking forward to next week’s tides and hope the weather plays ball.
